Day 2 - Resolution Bay to Camp Cove
I started the day off early, made some oats, packed up the gear and hit the trail. Today was going to be rough, I knew it, I just hoped my body was ready for the new regime.
The morning was quite nice. Easy tramping, and by 11am I reached Furneaux Lodge. To my surprise they served coffee, lunch and also had wifi. The kitchen didn't open until noon so I took it as a sign to charge up some electronics, make some phone calls, and stretch! My left foot had been causing me discomfort since I started the trail yesterday, and I feared it was my plantar fasciitis coming back.
As I continued to hike, my foot got slightly more uncomfortable, and by the time I reached Camp Cove I was ready for it to rest. I know from my experience starting the north island that the beginning is the hardest part of the trail. My body needs to readjust to the new life style, and this is when injury is most likely to happen.
My camp was a popular spot on the trail. There was easily 10 or more people camped here. I set up camp, and then went and found Kim, the old fella that was at Resolution Bay with me last night. He was ecstatic to see I made it and asked if I wanted to head down to the dock for a beer. How could I resist? We chatted life, trail and TA. Kim had bright silvery blue eyes that filled with excitement with every story I told. He absolutely made my day.
When I made it back to camp a guy camped close by came and told me he scared a Weka off that was rummaging around in my tent. Before I go on I should mention what a Weka is. A Weka is a medium sized flightless bird that looks a lot like a Kiwi bird, but instead of having a long snout it has a smaller beak. And they're known for stealing things. This little shit poked 3 small holes through the bug net in my tent and ran off with my sponge. My new friend managed to get my sponge back, and to my surprise I found out he was hiking the TA. We sat down at a nearby bench and started talking about the trail when another guy came and joined us, and he also was hiking the TA. My first encounter with TA thru hikers. Finally. Turned out there was another girl camped here who was walking it as well. I went and talked with her for a bit and what do you know! She's from Winnipeg! Her name was Kat and she was just about to finish the South Island. She had to skip the Richmond Range due to weather so decided to walk the Queen Charlotte back to Pelorous Bridge.
By 8:30pm I'm in my tent messaging my feet and hoping tomorrow the pain isn't worse. I have a harder day of walking then I had today and if my foot pain increases I'll have to find some sort of solution. I have KT tape, but I just don't think it's good enough. Ill plan to buy insoles in Havelock before I go into the Richmond Range.
